Company Dreadnoughts: finally qualified as a full battle company of Daemonbanes

While I have several other units and models from outside the company itself - the one thing I needed to finish for the core company was the dreads. I've wanted to paint a blood angels dreadnought since they came as 2kg of pewter, with paper banners, goblin green bases, and you were expected to paint bright yellow flames down the side.

Drop Pods: final details and assembly

On the home stretch on the rather fun, if time consuming process of building drop pods. This is the last round with a few snippets of painting, plus final assembly.

Drop Pods: painting & detailing

Having put all the files and glue away - the drop pods are moving onto painting. This is one of the more complex sets of sub assemblies I have done with airbrushing, and includes a whole bunch of (hopefully) clever masking.

Drop Pods: an exercise in magnet & plastic engineering

Most model gamers think of the hobby in a 'build' mode and a 'paint' mode (and 'play/game' mode of course). I also think of there being an 'engineering' stage - this is distinct from just 'building' in that it covers modifying a kit so that it can be magnetised, open/closed, strengthened with pins/sprue or even just recut if grabbing parts from different kits.

I often quite like this part, as it involves thinking about how to solve something that isn't on the instructions. Often building in functionality or swap-ability it wasn't intended for.

Not all models *need* this type of engineering; some don't need any at all. But some need an extensive amount.

The marine drop pod is one of those models.

Assault Bike Squad: assembly and aftermath

Home stretch now - putting all the many many pieces together, along with a few bonus extra painting steps to finish them up.

Assault Bike Squad: riders, basing & painting

Still plenty of steps to build up the bikers and accompanying bling. This post will cover a good chunk of the process with lots of pictures.

Assault Bike Squad: construction & priming

Catching up on a post for a squad finished a few months ago. This is the only bike squad I have done (and probably the last) so I took a bunch of excessive pictures of the process.

2020 in Review: Models Painted

A quick look back at 2020 and how much I managed to get built and painted in the year. Turns out it was a reasonable chunk, with around 100 models in that time.

Mephiston Reborn: #2

Follow up post finishing off Mephiston - it's really quite a nice model and surprisingly less fiddly to get into details than several other BA characters. Strap in though. I took lots of photos of each detail as I'm not likely to paint another Mephiston until he gets a 3rd model in 25 more years.

Mephiston Reborn: WIP #1

Definitely a little late to the party, but getting around to putting paint on my Mephiston model. Really like the pose and style - modern version based on a very classic bit of artwork.

Librarian in Terminator Armour

This guy has been kicking around my desk since about March, when I airbrushed 17 terminators and 50 magnetised arms. I left him out when batch painting all the others red, and it's taken me a while to feel like picking up another terminator...

Terminators: Arms & Armaments

Last post left off with me having finished up 15 magnetised terminator models - which of course left me with a massive pile of magnetised arms to paint as well...

Terminators: Bodies & Basing

Since I magnetised all my terminator arms, I figured that it will be best to do the bodies and bases first; that way I will be able to attach sets of arms onto the completed bodies later to make painting easier. I've done these from the ground up. Bases & bodies first, with arms and attachments to come in a later post.

Terminators: Pinning & Priming

Having tidied away the sector imperialis boards, I'm back to working on small(ish) minis again. I have 3 squads of terminators ready to prime up.

Space Hulk board tiles in action (with terminator stand ins)

I finished up my Space Hulk tiles a little bit before Christmas but never got around to adding some photos of them in use. Few pics from a game earlier this year.

Sector Imperialis Boards: Wrap up

As the big project for the first half of 2020 wraps up... I thought it worthwhile to summarise the steps that were taken to paint everything, plus add a few pictures of the boards set up with terrain.

Sector Imperialis Boards: Part 7

Home stretch now - adding some light effects over the top of everything else, then calling it a day. This has taken a bunch of hours over probably 3 months, during which the boards have mostly been either been on or resting next to our dining table.

Sector Imperialis Boards: Part 6

Up to the weathering episode; rust, dirt and blood.

I seem to keep adding time onto this project as it progresses. No individual step is super complicated or accurate, but by the time it takes to get around all 6 boards with a couple of small details, an hour can have passed.

Sector Imperialis Boards: Part 5

Last episode finished up with the white/marble inlay sections completed. That now leaves me with really just the aquilas to paint, plus all the weathering & rusting to finish up. This phase will also include some other little nuances.

Sector Imperialis Boards: Part 4

Getting relatively close to finishing up the sector boards now - and working on the detailing of some marble/stone sections which add a bit of flair on top of the Warhammer TV guide that the rest of the project has followed. Have quite been looking forward to trying this approach out.
