Something Different: Sam's Study

Ok - so this is about as far from 40k as it's likely to get in model building. As a little weekend project during lockdown weeks, we've been building a model kit in dollhouse scale of a study/library.

It has been a bit fun to work on something on a much larger scale than marines & terminators, and with much less painting.

The kit itself comes with a bunch of flat packed furniture and then a *heap* of paper templates to be cut out and turned into books to fill the space out.

Starting with the furniture itself - and a solid tube of UHU glue, the mini IKEA operation took a bit of time to get underway.

There are some particularly fiddly pieces like these - using eyelets or beads to add decoration to drawer handles.

Most of these went together ok... they aren't perfectly lined up to be 90 degrees on a couple but fine for model work.

Then the harder one hit. The chair. Damn this was fiddly - made up of multiple pieces of fabric, card and plywood in a complicated dance of glue and fingers. There are little paper cutting templates in the instructions to help get the fabric the right size. End result has a couple of rough edges but actually came together ok.

Also used this stage to redo the floor from the kit. The panel they give you comes with a set of printed green tiles on paper. Not particularly flash, so these have been replaced with coffee stirrers glued on, then washed with agrax earthshade to darken them up.

Really happy with the end colour that came up.

The decorations then took a lot longer, as there... are a lot of them. Gluing paper onto the picture frames was probably the quick part. Some of the single books also made to be fanned out; they involve folding a strip of paper forwards and backwards about 20 times then glued into the cover.

Individual books that can be used to fill gaps and stack on top of other objects. These are kinda cool - 2.5mm squares of ply (or 2 layers stacked together to make them 5mm books) then wrapped in paper covers. Approx 40x of these in total once they were all done. Plus a box of gift wrapping paper.

A lot of the books for the big shelves are in 'blocks' and these are really just hollow paper boxes cut out and glued together. On the other hand, there are about 60 of them.

Still more smaller details - there are 2 vases made of tissue paper wrapped around stems.

That's pretty much the full set of room contents done. Around 150 pieces to go into the furniture or to stick onto the walls.

We started by putting a few random blocks of books onto shelves but realised the differences in size and shape mean not everything is interchangeable. It's easier to follow what is on the cover art than mix and match your own combinations.

Even with just the basic hollow core books, the shelves have filled out quite nicely and are starting to look the part.

The big case in situ on the wooden floor.

The various other shelves with their main books installed.

Plus the other 'big' furniture to go between the book cases.

Very much coming together, with a lot of detail still to go.

Following post should involve inserting the single books, adding the walls, decorations like signage and gift cards. Then finally installing some battery powered lights (that is expected to be quite the challenge) and gluing the furniture permanently to the floor.
