Showcase: Dev squads Kushiel & Jehoel. Plus Ekfud has a go at airbrush OSL...

I painted my devs fully intending to add airbrush effects - but procrastinated about doing it for a couple of months. Airbrushing basecoats is fine, but adding details to an otherwise finished mini had me quite nervous...

Must of course give reference to Eggroll's BA blog for the concept - the paints have changed since he posted about lascannon & plasma glow, but the effect is otherwise the same.

Over a white, glazed power coil on each weapon type; airbrush the area with a few light passes. Low airbrush pressure (but very thin paint) seems to help build it up softly. The lascannons I am quite happy with - heavily thinned moot green works well.

The plasma cannons (plus a tac sergeant) are pretty good... although the blue built up very slowly and then was suddenly opaque. Couple of less passes with ice blue would have been a more balanced result. To lessen the effect, I gave the edges of the plasma coils a bit of extra white with brush to bring the glow up again.

Both squads plus sergeants on unit tray - at some stage I'll do some more tactical marines with blue helmets and split these into 2 full squads of 10.

Quick bit of mobile phone camera posing. Technically still need to add a matt varnish to knock the gloss off the decal areas (ie, shoulder), but otherwise glad to have added the effects.

The overspray on the chest is just about subtle enough to convey some glow without destroying the original armour colour...

Squad Jehoel including sergeant.

Squad Kushiel (including blue optimus prime helmet...). The lascannons seem to act like a beacon on a game-board sized space. Possibly not a good thing tbh.

The banner packs for these sergeants have been magnetised to allow swapping for the signum unit. Since the rules for 8th imply they have them standard, arguably I could just keep the banners in play... but they are done now, and I seem to have developed an obsession with magnetising everything.

Extra large shot including the recently finished assault squad up front. For some reason the bright colours all together keep reminding me of Google branding.

Lastly - army vanity shot. Should take some on a game board (rather than my glass table), but good to see 20 tacticals, 10 devs, 10 assault, librarian (plus some casualty/objectives) all laid out.

I'm working on some Death Company now, but when they are done, that only leaves a single tactical squad and couple of command minis to make up a (traditional) demi-company - which is what I was originally aiming for.

Chances are I'll keep extending that now with 20-squad companies in 8th (including Primaris), although that will probably take me another 2-3 years to work through.

Plus very keen to keep pressing on with some Space Hulk board pieces and minis in 2018.
