Up to the weathering episode; rust, dirt and blood.
I seem to keep adding time onto this project as it progresses. No individual step is super complicated or accurate, but by the time it takes to get around all 6 boards with a couple of small details, an hour can have passed.
The usual suspects have come out for this stage - rusting (the excellent Typhus corrosion and ryza rust), oxide on bronzes (nihilakh oxide) and blood for the blood god.
Probably the longest stage is going around with Typhus corrosion first, both to form the underlying rust patches as well as line all the gutters with grime. Typhus corrosion is really a mix of brown wash with a very fine grit. The grit is excellent for giving rust a rough texture, but it didn't go great in the gutters. On the curved surface, I probably spread it too thin and as a result the grit was flaking off rather than being stuck down.
Take 2... going back over the deepest parts of the gutters with a bottle of agrax earthshade GLOSS, which I accidentally bought instead of the regular version a year ago. This actually worked really well - it's given a wet look, helped stick down some of the grit in the gutters and really darkens the area so at a distance there is a defining line between road and buildings.
Working around the rest of the sections with Typhus took a solid couple of hours. This was probably the longest step remaining though, so the rest will get quicker. Most of these are still relatively light - I'm aiming for some colour rather than turning all the metal into a solid block of rust.
Er - having said that... the pipe areas on the straight road sections I went much heavier. Probably could have just about skipped painting them brown first and just slapped corrosion all over them. These have then had a dusting of ryza rust to bring up the orange levels, and you can see how the dirt/sand in the typhus corrosion catches that paint.
Working the orange drybrush around is much quicker than the brown wash underneath it - just a quick dust in smaller sections of it and we're largely done. Not going to win awards, but the effect looks alright at tabletop distance.
Actually getting very close to finished now. Would be fairly happy having a game as is.
Small backtrack - I had intentionally left a bunch of the skulls on the straight road sections while the metallics were getting slapped around. Going back to finish these up now.
There are still just a couple of last effects I want to add - partly with airbrush, so these will come next time.
For the hell of it I pulled out a couple of squads and tanks to sit on a single board. 30 marines and vehicles fill a most of a board; looking forward to setting up a full company on these at some point.
